Making Sense of Faith in God
Jonathan Clatworthy
SPCK Publishing, June 2012. Paperback, 96 pages.
Details / buy from: Modern Church
Publisher's notes: This book deals with the popular interest in spirituality, and physicists' interest in God, as opposed by the new atheists. It also considers the role of God in a secular society. Modern secularism separates religion from secular knowledge and expects us to explain reality without reference to God. This taboo on God limits our understanding of life as we experience it, and undermines confidence in human knowledge generally.

Publisher's description: Many people are put off Christianity by the idea of God punishing his Son for our sins. They find it hard to believe in a loving God who appears to be so angry and vindictive. This book addresses some of these difficult questions. It will form ideal reading for those wanting to return to their faith, or those who would like to explore it in greater depth. The book aims to create an open theological landscape, which will take account of the many different ways in which we are saved and restored.

Chesterton and Tolkien as Theologians
Alison Milbank
T & T Clark, reprint edition 2009. Paperback, 208 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
This book offers a new reading of Tolkien in terms of Chesterton's literary and theological project. It takes Chesterton's 'natural theology' through fairytales seriously as a theological project appropriate to an intellectual attempt to return to faith in a secular age. It argues that Tolkien's fiction makes sense also as the work of a Catholic writer steeped in Chestertonian ideas and sharing his literary-theological poetics. While much writing on religious fantasy moves quickly to talk about wonder, Milbank shows that this has to be hard won and that Chesterton is more akin to the modernist writers of the early twentieth-century who felt quite dislocated from the past.
Alien Sex: The Body and Desire in Cinema and Theology
Gerard Loughlin
Wiley-Blackwell, 2003. Paperback, 336 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
Gerard Loughlin is one of the leading theologians working at the interface between religion and contemporary culture. In this exceptional work, he uses cinema and the films it shows to think about the church and the visions of desire it displays.
- Discusses various films, including the Alien quartet, Christopher Nolan's Memento, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth and Derek Jarman's The Garden.
- Draws on a wide range of authors, both ancient and modern, religious and secular, from Plato to Levinas, from Karl Barth and Hans Urs von Balthasar to André Bazin and Leo Bersani.
- Uses cinema to think about the church as an ecclesiacinema, and films to think about sexual desire as erotic dispossession, as a way into the life of God.
- Written from a radically orthodox Christian perspective, at once both Catholic and critical.
Sex and Uncertainty in the Body of Christ: Intersex Conditions and Christian Theology
Susannah Cornwall
Equinox, 15 Sep 2010. Paperback, 192 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
The book explores the theological implications of physical intersex conditions and their medical treatment. Christian theology has valued the integrity of the body and the goodness of God reflected in creation, but has also set much store by the complementarity of "normal" male and female physiology. However, a deconstruction or querying of male and female as essential or all-embracing human categories changes conceptions of legitimate bodiliness and of what it means for human sex to reflect God. Theologies which value incarnation and bodiliness must speak with stigmatized or marginal bodies too: the Body of Christ is comprised of human members, and each member changes the Body's definition of itself as well as being defined by it.
The Making of American Liberal Theology: Imagining Progressive Religion - 1805-1900
Gary Dorrien
Westminster John Knox Press, 2001. Paperback: 528 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
The first in a three-volume history, this text identifies the indigenous roots of American liberal theology and uncovers a wider, longer-running tradition than has been thought. Taking a narrative approach the text provides a biographical reading of important religious thinkers of the time, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Ward Beecher, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Charles Briggs. It notes that although liberal theology moved into elite academic institutions, its conceptual foundations were laid in the pulpit rather than the classroom.
The Making of American Liberal Theology: Idealism, Realism and Modernity - 1900-1950
Gary Dorrien
Westminster John Knox Press, 2003. Paperback: 666 pages.

In the second of this three-volume history Gary Dorrien tells the story of American theological liberalism in its heyday, exploring the diversity of liberal theologians and schools of thought, as well as the central importance of liberal debates over idealism, realism, naturalistic empiricism, and 'making Christianity modern'. Breaking with previous interpretations, he treats Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich as theorists of a 'neoliberal' position within the liberal tradition.
The Making of American Liberal Theology: Crisis, Irony, and Postmodernity: 1950-2005
Gary Dorrien
Westminster John Knox Press, 2006. Paperback: 688 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
In this concluding volume of his magisterial trilogy, Gary Dorrien sustains his previous definition of liberal theology and his mixture of theological, philosophical, and historical analysis, while emphasizing the unprecedented diversity of liberal theology in the postmodern age. Dorrien argues that liberal theology has been in crisis for the past half-century, yet despite the crisis, and also because of it, it has also experienced a 'hidden renaissance' of intellectual creativity. Liberal theology in the early twenty-first century is more diverse, complex, and marginalized than ever before in its history, he concludes, but its essential idea - creating a progressive, credible, integrative third way between orthodox over-belief and secular unbelief - remains as necessary as ever.

Details / buy from: Amazon UK
Is the Church a box from which God has escaped? Are people finding spirituality and relating to God in ways that have nothing to do with the Church? Men and women today have strong values and beliefs about caring for animals and for the environment, about tolerance for others of different beliefs and customs, and about how we each may live mature and fulfilled lives. They often feel that the Church's moral teaching does not come up to their standards. In this book Richard Harries takes seriously their thoughts and criticisms.

The Inclusive God: Reclaiming Theology for an Inclusive Church
Steven Shakespeare and Hugh Rayment-Pickard
Norwich: Canterbury Press, 2006. Paperback: 128 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
This short, accessible and compelling book argues that an inclusive vision of God lies at the heart of Christian theology. Since the 1960s liberal theology has been driven by social justice issues and an ethic of tolerance. This has not been enough to check the rise of neoconservative theologies that now predominate in the Churches. Liberal theology now needs to stake a claim for the very identity of Christianity itself, showing how mainstream and inclusive values have always been a central strand of Christian thinking and represent the majority view.
Liberal Theology: A Radical Vision
Peter C. Hodgson
Augsburg Fortress, 2007. Paperback: 148 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
In this incisive work, distinguished theologian Peter Hodgson reflects on the precarious yet vital role of theology today and its nearly lost and sometimes discredited tradition of liberal thought, especially liberal theology. Liberal theology has been the main thread of Christian thinking over the last 200 years, but it threatens to be obscured by a rising tide of conservative and even fundamentalist Christianity, on the one hand, and a secular materialism, on the other.
The Old Creed and the New
Don Cupitt
SCM Press, 2006. Paperback: 151 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
Cupitt sharply juxtaposes the traditional Apostles' Creed of Western Christianity and the emergent creed of modern radical theology. Side by side they look amazingly different, and Cupitt carefully explains what is happening and why. The main change is that the old creed situated the believer within a huge narrative cosmology, the central myth of a great religion-based civilization, whereas the new creed merely defines the bare outlines of a modern spirituality.

Tony Windross
O Books, 2003. Paperback: 240 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK

It outlines, in 37 short chapters, many of the objections raised to formal Christian religion, and suggests ways of dealing with them which do not compromise people's intellectual integrity.
Brian Mountford sets out a liberal Christian position that is biblical, open, liturgically conservative, traditional, ethical and concerned with Christian action. He believes in the reality of God but finds him 'in the wound rather than the bandage'. For those searching for a credible faith this book is the perfect introduction to the best that Christianity has to offer.

The Contemporary Challenge of Modernist Theology
Paul Badham
University of Wales Press, 1998. Paperback: 179 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
The Modernists claim that core beliefs like faith in God, hope for life after death and respect for the teaching of the historical Jesus, could be freed from outmoded supernatural ideas like six-day creation, virgin birth, substitution atonement and Hell. They argue that for Christianity to survive it must be brought into line with the best of modern thought.

David A. Hart
O Books, 2006. Paperback: 260 pages.
Details / buy from: Amazon UK
In an age of terrorism and increasing Christian/Muslim conflict it's time for a new look at how different religions can be reconciled, and contribute to the peace of the world rather than its destruction.
David Hart finds the answer in the similarity of the philosophical traditions at the heart of each, rather than in the particular dogmas and doctrines that divide.
Dr David Hart is an Anglican priest and Hindu, living and working in South India. He is the India Secretary for the World Congress of Faiths.
